New homeowners, developers or residents in need of interior design update should always first consider new window treatments, but choosing the specific type of window treatment that’s best for your space is just the beginning. Before you install your fabulous new window treatment or have them custom made, you’ll need to perform a detailed set of measurements to ensure your window treatments fit into your house flawlessly.
To begin you’ll need a pencil, paper, and a stiff metal measuring tape, but more importantly, you’ll need a basic idea of what look you’re trying to achieve. Once you’ve decided on the treatment you’d like to move forward with, you’ll need to measure both the inside and outside of your window frame. Certain blinds will be installed inside the frame while draperies should hang well above the exterior frame.
The inside mount technique is typical for roman shades, honeycomb, or silhouette blinds. Remember when measuring that you’ll need to keep the hardware inside the window frame. Begin with the width, measuring inside the window frame at three different points (top, middle, bottom) and use the narrowest measurement for your determining figure. For the length, use the same method, but vertically, measuring three different points. Then use the longest length for your determining measurement (the exception being roman shades which require the shortest measurement).
