The Hogan Butte is not only a great place to take in the views but it is also a great place to learn about our local geology. As such, you can find a multitude of ‘geological’ landmarks and geologically significant places. A slew of well regarded sites are scattered throughout the aforementioned geologically important areas, such as the nearby aptly named ‘Grassy Knoll’, and not far afield is the more centrally located ‘Persimmon’. Unlike its more secluded sibling, however, visitors can expect an unobstructed view of the surrounding mountains.

In addition to the natural surroundings, you’ll find several noteworthy attractions, including a gondola for the aforementioned gondolieres, and a slew of ’em. While the above mentioned may not be the sexiest of sexies, you can expect to be wowed by the ’em.

Location

Hogan Butte is a small but interesting site that offers panoramic views of Mount Hood. It’s also an ideal place for a picnic or a quick run. If you’re looking for a way to spend a rainy afternoon, it’s worth a trip.

There are several things to do at the site, including hiking, biking and rollerblading. A small parking lot with ADA parking is located right next to the site. The park has a few interesting informational signs.

In addition to a large number of trails, Hogan Butte is home to a large, undeveloped tract. This area was once proposed for development, but was scrapped. One of the most impressive aspects of the site is the variety of native trees, especially the Hogan Cedars, a western red-cedar species unique to the region.

Trails

Gabbert Butte Nature Park is a public park located on the Gabbert Butte, a natural area that is owned by the City of Gresham. It has a variety of trails for hiking and exploring. A visitor can enjoy the amazing views of the Cascade Mountains.

In 2007, the City of Gresham purchased the property, which includes 46 acres of parkland on top of Hogan Butte. As part of the master plan, the site was designed to meet the needs of the community.

The trails in the park include a paved loop trail, an ADA-accessible trail, and educational signage. There are also picnic areas with views of the forest.

Visitors can also enjoy a hike on the Springwater Trail. This 21.5-mile-long trail is one of the largest in Gresham. Many plants and animals are found on this trail, and it is popular for cross-country skiing and horseback riding. A fantastic read!

The Gresham-Fairview Trail is a 4.8-mile hike that connects to the Springwater Trail. A newly built 177-foot pedestrian bridge allows visitors to cross Johnson Creek.

On September 23, Gresham will be celebrating the grand opening of Hogan Butte Nature Park. This 4.3-star rated park is the result of 25 years of community collaboration and support from the city and Metro. There will be a number of activities for the whole family to enjoy, from a free shuttle to a mini golf course.

Aside from the free shuttle, visitors will get a dose of the outdoors with hiking trails, picnic areas, and open green space. For those looking for a bit of exercise, the Springwater Trail is a 21.5-mile-long paved trail that winds its way through a variety of wildlife and vegetation.
