Park History
Happy Valley Nature Park is part of a complex pattern of development that makes up the neighborhood, blending the characteristics of an upscale housing development with areas of preserved open space. This is a very sensitive balance and will need to be carefully maintained in the future.
Happy Valley was acquired in 1937 through the Green Belt scheme, which linked town neighbouring areas of open land – farthing Downs and Coulsdon Common (given by the old Urban District Council). It included Devilsden Wood, Glebelands and at a later date Parson Pightle Estate.
The underlying landscape of chalk grassland and woodland provides a rich flora and fauna. The wildlife value of Happy Valley is primarily dependent on good management of the area. Techniques include mowing, prescribed burning, green strips, tree/shrub release, slash openings and water level manipulations to name a few. Find More!
