The park was developed in 1909 from land that former mayor William S. Ladd had used to generate “one of the most prestigious stock farms in the West.”
This beautiful city park was designed by Emanuel Mische, the park superintendent from 1908 to 1914, based on the Olmsted Brothers’ ‘natural’ landscaping approach. Mische created seven distinct areas, including the concert grove, Firwood Lake, children’s lawn, plateau and broad meadows, picnic grove, and Rhododendron Hill.
