Sellwood Riverfront Park
One of Portland’s most picturesque parks is Sellwood Riverfront Park. The neighborhood park offers great amenities for families and children, including picnic areas with beautiful views of the river. It also includes paths, baseball and softball fields, a soccer field, a basketball court, a horseshoe pit, and playgrounds. Dogs are welcome in this off-leash park as well. Read on to learn more.
Dog Park
Sellwood Riverfront Park is a great place to let your dog burn off some energy and play with other pups. This state-of-the-art park offers a double-fenced off-leash area with paved paths to walk around. Kids can enjoy the playground and skatepark, too, so it’s a perfect family outing.
This off-leash park is open from sunrise to sunset. The summer area features natural grass and is bordered by tall trees, while the winter section has a small beach made from sand for dogs to splash in. There are also benches, shade trees, and water taps for dogs to drink from. Water-loving pups can also head over to Fernhill Park for a 1.5-acre off-leash play area with access to water. This space is fenced and has fresh water + drinking bowls. Pet owners are encouraged to bring their own waste bags.
Picnic Areas
There are plenty of opportunities to picnic with the family at Sellwood Riverfront Park thanks to its extensive lawns and paths. It also features a stage, a play structure outdoor pool, baseball and softball fields, a basketball court, a football field, a horseshoe pit, and soccer fields. The playground at this neighborhood park is a popular spot with kids and offers two structures of varying difficulty for children to climb on. On hot days the nearby outdoor pool is a refreshing alternative to cool off. Towering evergreens keep this area of the park in the shade. This is a popular place to spend time with the kids all year round. A great place to also visit is the Lewis and Clark State Recreation Site.
Playgrounds
A great place for the kids to run, climb, and play. This park has several playgrounds and the majority of them are shady so even on hot days they’re a good choice for little ones. There is a small Japanese Garden with koi a learning garden and trails that can be walked at this park, too.
Peninsula Park: It’s hard to get a drop of sun at this Southwest playground due to its location under towering evergreens, which makes it great for younger kids. But it’s still challenging for older kids with lots of metal and wood, tricky climbs, and steep drops, so if your kiddo is super young you might want to consider another option.
Washington Park: This epic Portland playground has more slides and ramps than you can imagine, and it’s shady and covered with climbing spots and places for active play so that even the stoic of kids can have a good time. It’s a short walk from the Macadam Bay Club and slightly east of the Sellwood Riverfront Park entrance on Oaks Parkway.
Boat Dock
The Sellwood Riverfront Park Boat Dock is a great place to dip your toes in the Willamette River. It is a favorite swimming spot for locals during hot days. You’ll find swimmers swan diving off the dock and sunbathing on the rocky beach. There are also eight ladders to help people in and out of the water. The dock is named after former Trail Blazer Kevin Duckworth who died in 2008.
Located south of downtown Portland, the park spans 7.6 acres with paths, picnic tables, a stage, a boat dock on the Willamette River, restrooms, and a dog off-leash area. Parking is available, although the huge lot can fill up fast on sunny weekends. Public transit access is good, too. The park is bordered by the neighborhoods of Johns Landing and Burlingame. It is also within walking distance of downtown Portland, making it a popular location for two- and four-legged park lovers. The riverfront area is well-suited for picnicking, playing lawn games, and lying on the sandy beach. Click here for the next blog post.
